HOLIDAY SAFETY REMINDERS
Sat, Jul 2nd, 2011 9:24:00 am This Holiday weekend, we would like to pass along some Safety reminders, in dealing with Fireworks and Grilling:

FIREWORKS:

Facts & figures

  • In 2009, fireworks caused an estimated 18,000 reported fires, including 1,300 total structure fires, 400 vehicle fires, and 16,300 outside and other fires. These fires resulted in no reported civilian deaths, 30 civilian injuries and $38 million in direct property damage.
  • In 2009, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 8,800 people for fireworks related injuries; 53% of 2009 emergency room fireworks-related injuries were to the extremities and 42% were to the head.
  • The risk of fireworks injury was highest for children agres 10-14, with more than twice the risk for the general population.
  • On Independence Day in a typical year, far more U.S. fires are reported than on any other day, and fireworks account for more than half of those fires, more than any other cause of fires.

In addition, a few reminders from the Swatara Twp. Fire Marshal in regards to Fireworks:

The following types of fireworks are ILLEGAL in Swatara Twp. and Pennsylvania:

-Any fireworks labeled 5G or more

-Any firework that shoots a projectile into the air

-Any firework which creates a loud noise (similar to an explosion, ex. M80)

GRILLING SAFETY:

Be sure to use safe grilling practices as the peak months for grilling fires approach – June and July. Gas grills constitute a higher risk, having been involved in an annual average of 6,200 home fires in 2004-2008, while charcoal or other solid-fueled grills were involved in an annual average of 1,300 home fires.

Facts & figures

  • In 2004-2008, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 7,700 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues per year, including an average of 3,200 structure fires and 4,500 outside fires. These 7,700 fires caused an annual average of 13 civilian deaths (to the nearest ten), 120 civilian injuries and $70 million in direct property damage.
  • More than one-quarter (29%) of the home structure fires involving grills started on a courtyard, terrace or patio, 28% started on an exterior balcony or open porch, and 7% started in the kitchen.
  • Flammable or combustible gas or liquid was the item first ignited in half of home outdoor grill fires. In 49% of the home outdoor fires in which grills were involved, 56% of the outside gas grills, and 39% of gas grill structure fires, the fire started when a flammable or combustible gas or liquid caught fire.

AND AS ALWAYS.....THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND, PLEASE DO NOT DRINK & DRIVE.

HAVE A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE 4TH OF JULY HOLIDAY WEEKEND!!!
